Mount Teneriffe WA

May 24th, 2022

We are the Mountain Goats Terrence(16) and today we climbed Mt Teneriffe.

This would be the 3rd time i've climbed Teneriffe and I always underestimate it. The trail up to the falls is snow free and fairly easy. Towards the end the trail begins to get steeper, but it only took us an hour to get to Teneriffe/Kamikaze falls. From there, right before the falls, on the right side of the trail, you will see an obvious trail going straight up. This trail is pretty steep and goes straight up to Mt Teneriffe's long ridgeline. This part of the trail is also snow-free and didn't take me over 20 minutes to get up to the ridge. From here you begin to snake along the ridge always going up. Be careful route-finding can be a issue, but using GIA I was able to stay on the path.

Down the creek goes

Teneriffe Falls

At about 3800 Feet the snow starts, I would recommend putting on micro-spikes although I didn't and got up just fine. You continue snaking up the ridge going through a few snow-fields until hitting a heavily wooded area. The trail hear is slippery and a pain here but after going through there you can see the summit. The summit block is about 75 vertical feet and is pretty easy to get up. The summit is pretty big and there's a lot of spots to sit. There's a small cornis on the top but the drop-off on the other side is only 5 feet. We  got good not great views of the surrounding mountains as the weather was turning.

On the summit

Going down was a pain without microspikes  and the climb down the ridge always seems longer than it should be. We were able to get down to the main trail in a little over an 1 hour and a half. From their the trails is nice and easy and we got back to the trailhead around 2:45. Overall this is a great training hike that's close to seattle. I would recommend micro-spikes but summiting is very doable without them.
